The course will include a demonstration of HCUPnet—the free, online query system that provides instant access to national, regional, and state-level hospital inpatient statistics based on HCUP data.

March 17-18, 2009 Workshop: Using HCUP Data for Pediatric Research

Summary: AHRQ staff presented a 1.5-day workshop at CCHMC focused on using the HCUP and Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) data resources to address pediatric research domains. In-depth information on the HCUP and MEPS databases, sample and survey design, file content, and the construction of analytic files was discussed. Guidance on formulating research plans utilizing the various data resources was provided.

May 6, 2009 Workshop: Hands-On Work with HCUP Databases and Tools

Summary: AHRQ sponsored a full-day hands-on workshop for health services researchers interested in using HCUP data resources. Participants were exposed to HCUP databases and related tools (including HCUPnet) via hands-on manipulation of the data, including file construction, producing national estimates, creating State-level output, and applying critical methods to produce correct standard deviations. Access to the HCUP Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) and State Inpatient Databases (SID) were provided during the workshop.

The session provided physicians and researchers with a concrete understanding of how Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) resources can be used to study health care issues for vulnerable populations, health policy, and women’s studies. The course also included an interactive demonstration of our free online querying tool, HCUPnet, with time allocated to address participant questions. Attendees could apply for CME credit.
