Summary: AHRQ staff will present a half-day workshop on AHRQ’s HCUP and MEPS databases at the ASHE 2nd Biennial Conference. A 90-minute introduction to HCUP databases, software, and related products, including the Cost-to-Charge Ratio Files and Hospital Market Structure File, will be presented, followed by a question and answer session. A demonstration of HCUPnet will also be provided, and participants will receive a free CD-ROM containing valuable resources that expand on topics covered in the session. The second part will provide a general 90-minute overview of the MEPS, its available data files, information about on-line data tools, and some examples of the type of research projects the MEPS data can support, followed by a question and answer session.

September 24-25, 2008 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) and Medical Expenditures Panel Survey (MEPS) Workshop – Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality

Summary: AHRQ will sponsor a two-day hands-on workshop for health services researchers covering two AHRQ resources: the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) and the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). A general overview of both resources will be given on the first day of the workshop. On the second day, participants will choose between attending an all-day, hands-on MEPS- or HCUP-focused workshop, held in separate, concurrent sessions. Participants will receive information on the components and capabilities of the HCUP and MEPS products, and learn how to extract data for research purposes.

January 4, 2008 Powerful Data, Meaningful Answers: Introduction to the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) – Virginia Commonwealth University

Summary: AHRQ researcher, Joanna Jiang, PhD, presented a 90-minute workshop at the VCU SAHP from 1-2:30 p.m. Dr. Jiang provided an in-depth overview of HCUP databases and software tools, with a focus on assisting researchers in using HCUP data and resources for their research interests. The workshop also included a demonstration of HCUPnet, the free online query tool, with time allocated to address attendee questions.

This conference provided an overview of the administration and congressional health policy agendas, as well as plenary and breakout sessions for topics, such as ensuring equitable health care access, fostering better care with better value, and managing system stressors.
