The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released the NIS Hospital Ownership File, the latest addition to the supplemental files created under the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP). The Hospital Ownership File is designed to facilitate a hospital-level analysis of the NIS by three non-collapsed hospital ownership categories: Government, nonfederal; Private, non-profit; and Private, invest-own.

Available in NIS databases prior to 1998, the HOSP_CONTRL element designated non-collapsed hospital ownership categories. H_CONTRL was replaced with HOSP_CONTROL, which combined categories to reduce the number of ownership strata in some regions. The Hospital Ownership File contains the HOSP_CONTRL element for use with data from 1998-2007.

The NIS Hospital Ownership File contains one record for each hospital (HOSPID) and year in the 1998-2007 NIS files, and can be merged with a NIS Hospital file by YEAR and HOSPID.
