Release of the 2012 Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) (July 2014)

Release Date: July 2014

Released every three years since the 1997 data year, the 2012 Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) is now available. The KID is the only all-payer dataset in the U.S. designed specifically to study hospital use, outcomes, and charges in the pediatric patient population. The KID focuses exclusively on pediatric (under age 21) populations.

The 2012 KID includes data from 44 states and can be weighted to produce national estimates, allowing researchers and policymakers to use the data to identify, track, and analyze national trends in pediatric healthcare. Its sample design enables analyses of rare conditions, such as congenital anomalies and uncommon treatments, such as organ transplantation.

The 2012 KID can be purchased through the HCUP Central Distributor, and statistics can be accessed via HCUPnet, a free online query system. Additional information on the KID is available on the HCUP-US website.
