General Notes

NEOMAT identifies discharges with neonatal and/or maternal diagnoses and procedures. The information on coding is available in the report on HCUP Quality Control Procedures posted on all HCUP database documentation web pages

For data beginning in the fourth quarter of 2015, the neonatal and/or maternal diagnoses and procedures are stored in the data element I10_NEOMAT to indicate the implementation of the ICD-10-CM/PCS coding system

District of Columbia

In 2016 and 2017, the overall number of neonatal records is about 9 percent lower than the number of maternal records. This is mostly caused by one large hospital that is missing about 40 percent of birth records for mothers with private insurance (PAY1=3).
