ICD-10-CM/PCS Tools

This section provides tools for use with the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification/Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-CM/PCS) data as well as documentation on how to use them.

HCUP ICD-10-CM/PCS Tools

Several HCUP tools have been translated to ICD-10. These tools organize data into meaningful clinical groups or classify data into broad categories that support analysis and more efficient data management.

ICD-10 Versions of HCUP Tools:

Clinical Classification Software (CCS) Diagnosis and Procedure: The Clinical Classifications Software (CCS) is a tool for clustering patient diagnoses and procedures into a manageable number of clinically meaningful categories.

Procedure Classes: The Procedure Classes provide users an easy way to categorize procedure codes into one of four broad categories: Minor Diagnostic, Minor Therapeutic, Major Diagnostic, and Major Therapeutic.

Chronic Condition Indicator: The Chronic Condition Indicator program provides an easy way for users to categorize ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes into one of two categories: chronic or not chronic.

Comorbidity Software: The Comorbidity Software assigns variables that identify comorbidities in hospital discharge records using ICD diagnosis coding.

MapIt Tool

MapIt tool is an automated mapping tool developed by AHRQ and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that utilizes General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs) to provide forward and backward (or reverse) mapping between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes.

General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs)

The General Equivalence Mappings have been created by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as a tool to assist with conversion of ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM. The GEMS are forward and backward mappings between the ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM code sets. In some cases there is a clear one-to-one match; however, ICD-9-CM often translates to several ICD-10-CM or ICD-10-PCS codes.
