AHRQ releases 2019 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) (October 2021)

Release Date: October 20, 2021

The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) featuring 2019 data is now available. The NEDS is the largest publicly available all-payer emergency department (ED) database in the United States. It enables analyses of ED utilization patterns and supports public health professionals, administrators, policymakers, and clinicians in their decision making regarding this critical source of care.

Constructed using records from the HCUP State Inpatient Databases (SID) and State Emergency Department Databases (SEDD), the NEDS provides information on patients admitted to the hospital through the ED and on patients treated and released or transferred to another hospital from the ED. The 2019 NEDS contains data from more than 33 million ED visits in 40 States and the District of Columbia, approximating a 20 percent stratified sample of hospital-owned EDs in the United States. Weighted, the NEDS estimates roughly 143 million ED visits in the United States. Beginning with the 2019 data year, the NEDS now includes information on patient race and ethnicity.

The 2019 NEDS can be purchased through the HCUP Central Distributor. Additional information is located on the NEDS Overview Page.
