OVERVIEW The Clinical Classification Software (CCS), formerly known as the Clinical Classifications for Health Policy Research (CCHPR), was developed as a means to categorize diagnoses and procedures into a limited number of clinically relevant categories. Developed for health policy analysis, the CCSs can be used for other purposes requiring a method for aggregating the thousands of ICD-9-CM diagnoses and procedures into a manageable number of meaningful categories. The CCS categories classify individual ICD-9-CM diagnosis or procedure codes. They are unlike DRGs, which group diagnoses and procedures accounting for relationships among them and to inpatient resource use. CCS is based on ICD-9-CM codes. It includes: - one classification scheme for diagnoses (260 categories prior to 1998, 280 categories beginning in 1998) and - one classification scheme for procedures (231 categories). In the HCUP databases before 1998, all E code diagnoses are grouped into one category (260). Beginning in the 1998 HCUP databases, E codes diagnoses are separated into 21 categories (2601-2621).
